I agree with all-is-God, etc., but what makes you think ‘at the heart of all religions there is the self. At the heart of all religions, there is no self — e.g. Buddhism is very clear on that! At the heart of all of them it seems to me,(e.g. the mystic Christian contemplates, the Sufis, etc.. etc… is the same perennial philosophy, garbed with different symbols.
I grant you organised religion does not necessarily bring people closer to their Self (which is Everything) but religion, as Gurdjieff implied, “depends on the man”, on the awareness of the being in question, “some using it as a ‘guide’ and others a ‘policeman’.
The problem you write of is caused by Ignorance, rather then ‘religion’
